Bulbuls are a short - necked slender passerines. Their tails are long and their wings are short and round. They vary in length from 13 cm of the Tiny Greenbul till 29 cm of the Straw - headed Bulbul. Although the sexes are alike, the females tend to be slightly small. The plumage of some species are colorful with yellow, red or orange vents, cheeks, throats, but most of them are drab, with uniform brown or black plumage. One author described the song of the Brown - eared Bulbul as, 'The most unattractive noise made by any other bird.'
